Special Education 

  • Rationale

The Education Act (1989) entitles students with special education needs to full inclusion in the state education system.

Southbridge School undertakes to accept and support the learning needs of all students including the gifted and talented and those requiring learning support.
At Southbridge School we will recognize our legal responsibility to welcome children with special education needs whose parents choose to have them enrolled.

  •  Purpose

    We aim:
     

    • for success in learning for those with special education needs by ensuring they are identified and receive appropriate support.

    • for equality of educational opportunity for those with special education needs.

    • to provide programmes, which enable those with special education needs to achieve success in their education.

 

  • Objectives

    • Partnership between parents/caregivers and the school is essential in identifying and addressing barriers to learning.

    • Teachers will aim to provide inclusive programmes to cater for a diverse range of students within the regular class programme. When necessary, special programmes will be provided through in class support, individual and group programmes.

    • Community resources, specialist services and agencies will be used to complement school services and contribute to the programmes in the school.

    • A range of data will be gathered and recorded to identify students, to provide programmes and inform decision making by the special education coordinator/committee.

    • The selection and exit criteria will be used to allocate teacher aide time.

    • Individual Education Plans will be developed and regularly reviewed for students on the Ongoing and Transitional Resourcing Schemes.

    • A written plan (ITP or GTP) will be developed for students who have specific need and/or require modification to the curriculum.

    • Student’s progress will be monitored according to School Policy, regular IEP reviews and the review of individual and group programmes.

    • Reporting on special education provision aims to facilitate the school decision making process, enhance educational opportunity and inform Board of Trustees, school staff and community.

    • Ongoing professional development will be made available to staff, both teachers and teacher-aides, who are involved in working with students who have special education needs.
