What is the Preschool Programme?
The preschool programme is on
Wednesdays from 2.15 to 3:00 pm in the Southbridge School New Entrant’s
classroom. It is for children who will be attending Southbridge School.
As their fifth birthday approaches, a series of four morning visits will
also be scheduled to help you and your child become familiar with the
morning routines.
The preschool programme is based
on parents supporting their children during their transition to school.
Your child will benefit most by
being involved in co-operative activities in a learning community. There
will be a range of activities, similar to any afternoon in the new
entrant classroom.
There is no charge for the
programme, only the cost of a reading folder to carry library books and
other activities to and from school.
There is no need to make an
appointment and it is up to you how regularly you attend the sessions.
Our librarian, Alison Inwood
will be in the library during the programme and we encourage children to
join our library and borrow books.
What Makes the Preschool Programme so
Great?
The programme introduces basic
competencies such as participating and contributing, relating to others
and thinking to solve problems in a group situation.
Having this groundwork gives the
child confidence as they begin their school life.
It also gives parents a sense of
purpose and a feeling of confidence.
Both the child and adult have
the opportunity to build confidence and become familiar with the staff
and school surroundings. This is a tremendous hurdle to overcome before
the ‘big day’.
How do I enrol my child in the programme?
Ř
There are
enrolment forms for you to fill in. Please hand them to Wendy Huriwai or
leave them with Anne Harrison at the Office.
Ř
Bring your child
to one of the sessions so that they can meet Mrs Huriwai and receive
their first activity pack.
