Our kapa haka group is a taonga of Southbridge School.
Students in Years 4 – 6 are able to participate in the group. They perform annually at the Christchurch Primary Schools’ Cultural Festival, Pō Whakangahau, mihi whakatau and other special occasions throughout the school year. The group is led by Mrs Bonnie Edmond and Mrs Wendy Huriwai and rehearses once a week in our school hall.
Annually we present pounamu for our kaitātaki tane and kaitātaki wahine (our male and female kapa haka leaders) and these students support the leadership of the group.
The group sometimes performs at Ngāti Moki marae, supporting Taumutu rūnanga as appropriate.
The group’s uniform was specially designed for Southbridge School and the design includes aspects of our school crest.
