Welcome to Term 3!

In writing our focus will start  with persuasive writing as we prepare for the annual speech competition at the end of Term 3. The students will choose their own topics to write about and they will bring and practise it at home as a part of their Home Learning. It is important that parents do not help students in regards to the content of their speech but you are able to support them in their delivery.  We will then move onto other writing genres that connect with our inquiry learning.

Since it is Term 3 it is important to check if students need more stationery. Every student should have a rubber, several pencils, a red pen, a highlighter (any colour), a ruler, a pencil sharpener and a whiteboard pen. This will ensure that they are equipped for any learning area. Students may also require new books since some books are getting full. Please talk to your child about these things.

Inquiry for Term 3 is based around Social Sciences with a focus on Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. Students will learn in greater detail about the Lake from the past to the present including environmental factors, mahinga kai (food source) for the local iwi and about the animals living there. If you have any expert knowledge that you would like to come in to share about the Lake or Taumutu please email me. We love having our community come in and share their knowledge.

Home Learning in Com 3 will be different this term and will be given out on a fortnightly basis starting on Monday in Week 1 and checked in Week 2 on Friday. If the Friday is a public holiday, Home Learning will be due on the Thursday instead. Your child will bring home:

  • Spelling words to learn for a test on every second Friday;
  • Basic Facts as part of Maths and their Basic Facts Brick Wall;
  • Students are expected to read at home books of interest to them.
  • There will be some optional Home Learning as well.

The expectation is that Home Learning is completed each fortnight. Please check how your child is going with their Home Learning and sign their book to let me know that you have seen this. If your child is unable to complete their Home Learning, a signed note from a parent or caregiver is required if students are unable to complete their assigned Home Learning.

I’m looking forward to another exciting term.

Ngā mihi,
